Joanne Shaw

Dr Joanne Shaw is Research Program Manager and Research Fellow, Psycho-oncology Co-operative Research Group (PoCoG), The University of Sydney. As a post-doctoral researcher Joanne has a national and growing international reputation in the fields of psycho-oncology and heath communication. In her role at PoCoG Dr Shaw has overall management responsibility for the conceptualization, development and facilitation of the group’s psycho-oncology clinical research program. Dr Shaw has played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of the Australian clinical pathway for management of anxiety and depression in cancer. As part of the wider pathway program Dr Shaw has lead the development of an on-line cancer health professional anxiety and depression training program. Dr Shaw has previously developed and conducted psychological interventions with patients with poor prognosis cancers and their caregivers. Dr Shaw’s communication research includes investigating the physiological responses of doctors breaking bad news and the impact on communication. Her current research is investigating models, quality and costs of delivering evidence-based psycho-oncology interventions builds on her previous experience developing and evaluating health professional training programs to improve quality of care
