Professor Maggie Watson is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the Royal Marsden Hospital, and Head of the Psychology Research Group Institute of Cancer Research, UK. She trained at the Universities of Bath and Sheffield undertaking her post-doctoral research at the University of Oxford. She is a member of several National and International groups in the field of Oncology and Psycho-Oncology. She is Honorary Professor in the Department of Clinical, Health and Educational Psychology of University College London and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Cancer Research. She was elected Vice-President of the International Psycho-Oncology Society in 2008 and became President of the Society in 2010. She is Co-Editor of Psycho-Oncology: Journal of Psychological, Social and Behavioral Dimensions of Cancer. She founded the British Psychosocial Oncology Group (BPOS) in 1983 and organized the inaugural congress for BPOS in 1984. She was made an Honorary Life Fellow of BPOS in 1990. In 2010 she was appointed an honorary external consultant to the WHO to advise on psychosocial care in cancer.
She is a Chief or Principal Investigator of several research projects and has more than 160 publications including 6 books. Her research interests include:
• Development and evaluation of psychological therapies for adult cancer patients
• Impact of cancer on families
• Psychosocial factors in cancer genetics
• Cancer in the elderly
