Dr. Carolyn Messner, DSW, MSW, is the Director of Education and Training at CancerCare. A licensed clinical social worker, Dr. Messner specializes in the psychosocial impact of cancer on patients, caregivers and families; methods to design educational interventions to ameliorate the distress of cancer; and cancer in the workplace. She pioneered the use of teleconference technology to bring information and support to cancer patients, their families, employers and healthcare professionals. She directs CancerCare’s Connect Education Workshop Program, reaching over 51,000 patients and families annually. Dr. Messner is also an adjunct lecturer at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. She is a Past President of the Association of Oncology Social Work; Vice President of The Center for Clinical Social Work; APOS Scientific Program Committee Member; Chair of the Psychosocial Section of the American Association of Cancer Education (AACE); and Distinguished Practitioner in Social Work, National Academies of Practice. Dr. Messner is the recipient of the Leadership in Oncology Social Work Award; The Oncology Social Worker of the Year Award; the National Academies of Practice Creativity in Interdisciplinary Practice Award; and member of Phi Beta Kappa. She holds a Doctorate in Social Welfare from the City University of New York (CUNY) and received the Doctoral Fellowship Award in Social Welfare from CUNY.
